What to expect
Piazza della Repubblica
The tour begins in the elegant Piazza della Repubblica, the beating heart of Florence’s city center, bustling with life at all hours of the day and night.
With a quadrangular plan and surrounded by beautiful arcaded buildings, this square is characterized by the imposing Arch and the central Column of Abundance. The presence of historic coffee bars and occasional performances by street artists and portrait painters adds a vibrant and colorful touch to the square. A merry-go-round is also located in the center of the square, giving it a romantic and elegant, old-fashioned feel.
Do you already know the history of this square? Our guide will tell you how it has changed over time and will share some interesting trivia with you.
Piazza del Duomo
This UNESCO World Heritage-listed square will leave you breathless: the Gothic Cathedral, Brunelleschi’s Dome, the Baptistery and Giotto’s Bell Tower will amaze you with their elegance and majesty.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, simply known to everyone as the Duomo of Florence, is a true masterpiece of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, making this place one of the most important monuments in Italy.
If Piazza della Repubblica is considered the commercial heart of Florence, Piazza del Duomo is the spiritual heart of the city.
Piazza della Signoria
Piazza della Signoria is Florence’s central square, the seat of the municipality and the heart of the city. Every day it is immortalized by millions of tourists from all over the world who stop enraptured to admire its majesty and harmony. Visiting it during the calm hours of the evening will be a privilege.
A true open-air museum: here, in fact, you can admire magnificent monuments including Palazzo Vecchio, now the seat of the Municipality of Florence as well as a museum, the Fountain of Neptune built by Bartolomeo Ammannati and the equestrian statue of Cosimo I by Giambologna. Admiring the whole square you can, in addition, see the copy of Michelangelo’s David and in the Loggia dei Lanzi the Rape of the Sabine Women and Perseus with the head of Medusa.
Not far from Perseus is another mysterious face, engraved on a stone on the Palazzo Vecchio. Who is it? Your tour guide will reveal the interesting legend behind this effigy.
The Uffizi Galleries
The walk will continue towards the portico of the Uffizi Galleries. You will admire the great Uffizi building, one of the most important Italian architectural works of the 16th century and today home to one of the most important museums in the world, visited by millions of tourists every year. Designed by Giorgio Vasari in 1560, it was commissioned by Cosimo de’ Medici as the seat of the arts and magistracies. The unique U-shape of the piazza around the museum is a special feature that makes this place unique. The long sides start from Piazza della Signoria reaching the riverbank and are characterized, on the ground floor, by a large and spacious portico with Doric columns and barrel vaults. A beautiful backdrop for your pictures either towards the Arno or towards Piazza della Signoria.
Ponte Vecchio
Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and striking places in Florence at sunset is the Ponte Vecchio. There is a long and curious history behind this medieval bridge dating back to the 14th century. Initially occupied by butchers who were later expelled because of the bad smell of their activities, it was later occupied by jewelers and goldsmiths, who are still present today with their wonderful stores.
Do you know why during World War II all the bridges in Florence were destroyed except the Ponte Vecchio? Our experienced guide will tell you the real reason why. Walking along the banks of the Arno will be a relaxing and romantic experience, with the city lights reflected in the water.
The beauty of this bridge in the evening cannot be described, it should only be experienced!
