What to expect

Castello Sforzesco

The tour begins at Castello Sforzesco, where your guide will be waiting for you at the foot of the Torre del Filarete. From here you’ll enter the courtyards of Castello Sforzesco. This magnificent building is considered one of the most beautiful castles in Italy, and one of the largest in Europe. Originally the seat of power of the Visconti family, and later of the Sforza dynasty, today it is home to the city’s most important museums. The castle is illuminated at night, and the play of light and shadows animates the battlements and towers. But do you know its history? Facts and curiosities will be revealed by the guide who will accompany you on this tour.

Teatro Alla Scala

Passing through Via Dante and Via dei Mercanti in the company of your expert guide, you’ll come to Piazza della Scala. In the centre of the square, a statue of Leonardo da Vinci stands like a guardian watching over these important historical sites. This square is home to the famous and elegant Teatro Alla Scala and Palazzo Marino, today the seat of Milan City Council.
Teatro Alla Scala is the opera house where leading performers and composers have made their careers; think of Giuseppe Verdi or Maria Callas. Architecturally, the facade is sober and simple, its distinguishing feature the porch where carriages could stop and allow opera goers to alight without getting wet in rainy weather. Did you know that this was the first theatre in the world lit with electricity in 1883?

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

From Piazza della Scala, you can walk through Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the city’s major attractions. This is the most atmospheric and artistic shopping centre in Milan, today home to the most exclusive high-end boutiques. Here you can soak up the spirit and rhythm of Milan: from dazzling shop windows to a quick coffee at the counter, from the city’s most exclusive hotel to fast food outlets, all under the same stunning iron and glass roof. Inside the Galleria there’s a good-luck ritual performed every day by thousands of tourists, and our guide will explain this curious tradition.

Piazza del Duomo

The final stop on your tour is Piazza del Duomo, the very heart of the city. Here the Cathedral stands in all its breathtaking majesty and beauty. The square surrounding the cathedral is enormous, and it’s very easy to walk around and take photos. In addition to the cathedral, in the square you’ll find some of Milan’s most important monuments, including the statue of Victor Emmanuel II on horseback that stands in the centre of the square, the Royal Palace, now an exhibition space, the Museo del Novecento and the Archbishop’s Palace. The nighttime illuminations will astonish you and make the atmosphere under the porticoes even more magical.
